Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 42 inside 14 overs to give South Africa the upper hand on day two of the first Test in Durban.

This was Sri Lanka’s lowest total in their Test history, eclipsing their previous worst of 71 against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994.

Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 13 with five batters recording ducks and only two hitting double figures.

Left-armer Marco Jansen took career-best figures of 7/13 from 6.5 overs to record his second five-wicket haul in 15 Tests.

Kagiso Rabada (1-10) opened proceedings with the crucial wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne for 2, before Jansen ran amok from the other end.

Third seamer Gerald Coetzee took the other two wickets as the Proteas delivered the perfect riposte to an underwhelming effort of 191 all-out in the first innings.

Temba Bavuma was the glue that held South Africa together with an impressive 70 from 117 balls, giving them at least something respectable to bowl at.

Asitha Fernando was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers with 3-44.
