India took the final seven wickets to seal a comprehensive 295-run victory over Australia on day four of the first Test at Optus Stadium.

The hosts were dismissed for 238 in the final session as India continued their fine run of Test results down under to take a 1-0 lead.

Opener Usman Khawaja was first to fall after top-edging a pull to Rishabh Pant, before Mohammad Siraj struck again to remove an out-of-form Steve Smith for 17 with a delivery that straightened and caught the edge.

Travis Head provided the main resistance with a superb 89, while local boy Mitchell Marsh added 47 in a quick-fire partnership of 82 that simply delayed the inevitable of a crushing India win.

Washington Sundar also impressed with two wickets, removing Nathan Lyon with a beauty that crashed into off-stump.

Mitchell Starc was his other victim to fall courtesy of a fine Dhruv Jurel catch- the usual wicketkeeper reacting rapdily to snaffle a one-handed take at short-leg.

It was then up to debutant seamer Harshit Rana to finish off proceedings when Alex Carey (36) misjudged a slower ball and his stumps were disturbed.

The two teams meet again for the second Test in Adelaide on December 6.

Australia will look to preserve their near perfect record in day-night Tests and level the series after a contest that leaves captain Pat Cummins scrambling for answers.

The tourists, however, will be boosted by the return of captain and opener Rohit Sharma.

Glorious Bumrah shines again

In a match that saw Jasprit Bumrah replace Rohit Sharma as Indian skipper, the 30-year-old responded to extra responsibility with a superb display of pace and accuracy that outlined his position as the world’s best all-format bowler.

Having been rolled out for 150 on the opening day, leaving Australia in charge, Bumrah’s brilliance played a key role in India’s complete dominance over the rest of the match.

His match figures of 8/72 were his second best in 41 Tests, taking his career tally to 181 wickets at a staggering average of 20.06.

The late Englishman Sydney Barnes (16.43) is the only bowler to average less than Bumrah with a cutoff of 150+ wickets.
