England have announced their ODI and T20I squads as they prepare for the visit of old rivals Australia, starting in Southampton on September 11.
The most notable absentees from England’s 15-man squads are Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow and veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali.
Their exclusion from both outfits could signal the end of both of their international careers, with both players also out of the picture in the Test XI.
Bairstow, 34, has featured in 187 limited-overs games for the Three Lions, while Ali, 37, has played 230 limited-overs fixtures since his debut in 2014.
Moeen was part of England’s victorious 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup campaigns.
Bairstow was a key cog in England’s dramatic 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, scoring 532 runs and two centuries across the tournament.
England have introduced fresh blood in the form of Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix pair Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, both of whom have been rewarded for their fantastic domestic displays with maiden call-ups.
20-year-old Bethell features in both squads, while all-rounder Mousley has been selected in the T20 squad only.
Leicestershire left-arm quick Josh Hull, 20, is another new name in the frame as he is included in both squads.
The 6ft7in quick is enjoying a remarkable week after being included in the Test squad for the final two matches against Sri Lanka.
Hampshire quick John Turner and Essex batter Jordan Cox, who narrowly missed out on a Test debut last week, are the other exciting additions.
Surrey wicket-keeper Jamie Smith is likely to add to his two previous ODI caps against Ireland, having been rewarded with selection after a fabulous start to his Test career against West Indies and Sri Lanka.
The 24-year-old scored a magnificent maiden Test hundred (111) in England’s hard-fought five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Old Trafford last week.
Lancashire and Oval Invincibles quick Saqib Mahmood is perhaps a surprise inclusion in the T20 squad after a successful return from injury.
He took 7 wickets in five matches across the 2024 Hundred season, including three in the final, but has not featured for England since March 2023.
Jos Buttler returns as skipper having missed the whole Hundred season with a calf injury, meanwhile the ECB have stated that Joe Root’s omission from the ODI squad is purely to rest him.
This series is Marcus Trescothick’s first in charge as interim head coach following Matthew Mott’s departure.
T20 Squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, John Turner.
