Essex all-rounder Matthew Critchley has signed a deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2027 season.

The 27-year-old signed for the club ahead of the 2022 season, following six years at Derbyshire.

Alongside being club player of the year in 2023, Critchley has taken 80 wickets and scored 2000 runs in 54 matches across all formats for Essex.

On the news, Critchley said: “I’ve enjoyed my first couple of years here and very much wanted to stay.

“Obviously, we’ve had a couple changes to the team this winter, but we’ve made some good additions, so I’m very much looking forward to this year.”

Essex will be looking for Critchley to continue the strong all-round performances this season and beyond, particularly in the absence of the big-hitting Dan Lawrence.

Lawrence, 26, agreed a move to Surrey ahead of the 2024 season.

The great Sir Alastair Cook has also retired, but Essex will be buoyed by the recent signing of former South African opener Dean Elgar.

Elgar scored over 5000 runs in a sparkling Test career which ended after the second Test against India at Newlands in January.
