Captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood take 4 wickets apiece as Australia make a great start to the first Test match against West Indies at the Adelaide Oval.

The Aussies finished day 1 59-2, in response to West Indies’ underwhelming effort of 188 all-out.

Steve Smith departed for 12 in his first innings as a test opener- debutant Shamar Joseph prizing his wicket with his first ball in Test cricket.

It was a day to remember for Joseph after he starred with the bat and collected the scalp of Marnus Labuschagne when a well-directed short ball was pulled into the hands of Gukadesh Motie at deep fine-leg.

Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green remain unbeaten on 30 and 6 respectively.

Earlier on, the hosts’ attack was on the money straight away.

Cummins created an immediate impact when he removed Tagenarine Chanderpaul with this fourth delivery, Green taking a sharp catch in the gully on his return to the side.

He then removed fellow opener Kraigg Brathwaite for 13 as the ball cannoned into his off-stump.

Kirk McKenzie resisted with a classy maiden Test 50 in his second appearance, however Hazlewood ripped the heart out of the WI middle order in removing Athanaze, Hodge, Greaves and the dangerous McKenzie.

His dismissal of Athanaze was his 250th in Test Cricket.

With Lyon, Starc and Cummins all past the milestone too, it is the first time in the history of Test cricket that each member of a bowling quartet has at least 250 scalps to their name.

Further wickets fell as WI were reduced to 133-9 inside 49 overs, but a final wicket partnership of 55 between Kemar Roach and Shamar Joseph gave the total more respectability.

Joseph struck a number of beautifully-timed boundaries through the on-side, while Roach stood firm with a composed 17 not out.

A somewhat frustrating partnership for Australia was ended when Nathan Lyon pinned Joseph LBW for 36.

With eight wickets in hand, Australia will be looking to ram home their advantage and bat way into day 2 and beyond.
