Mohammad Siraj shined with six for 15 as the hosts were dismissed before lunch on day one of the second test at Newlands.

Fellow pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and debutant Mukesh Kumar also took two wickets apiece as India produced the perfect response to their abysmal innings and 32 run defeat in the first test at Centurion.

Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne top-scored with 15, meanwhile Durham batter David Bedingham was the only other South African to make double figures in scoring 12 off 17 balls.

The total of 55 in just 23.2 overs is the Proteas’ lowest in a test since 1932.

India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck as he chopped on to Kagiso Rabada early on in their response, however the tourists soon developed a lead as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill combined for a counter-attacking partnership of 55.

Nandre Burger removed both Sharma and Gill courtesy of smart Marco Jansen catches before also dismissing Shreyas Iyer for nought as he feathered behind to Verrynne.

Talisman Virat Kohli looked fluent and close to his best as he strode his way to 46, ably supported by a dogged KL Rahul, however Rahul’s wicket triggered a dramatic collapse of six wickets for no runs in only 22 balls.

Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger each claimed three wickets as the Proteas’ bowled India out for 153 and restricted their first innings lead to 98.

Aidan Markram stood firm with 36 not out, but there was time for three more wickets to tumble as Bumrah and Kumar combined to remove Elgar, De Zorzi and Stubbs.

Dean Elgar, playing his final test, ended his illustrious career with an innings of 12.

South Africa finished the day’s play 62 for three, still trailing by 36 runs.

Markram and Bedingham will need to bat long into day two to give South Africa any hope of sealing a two nil series win.
